The Liverpool home match on Sunday is looming large for Arsenal as the Premier League title race is heating up, however, the team can not look past Tuesday’s Champions League match v Shakhtar Donetsk.
The new UCL format no longer provides the group stage concept. There is no home and away format v just three clubs in your group. Beginning this season, every match has more importance in this competition, and every game must be approached in a win only mentality.
Here’s how it works. The top 8 clubs on the final table of the league phase from the 36 who originally started in the tournament automatically qualify for the round of 16. Those finishing 9th to 24th will enter a two-legged knockout play-off. The winners of these play-offs will fill the remaining eight spots in the round of 16. Teams finishing 25th and below will be eliminated from the competition. To avoid playing two more match, being in the top 8 is vital.
So, Shakhtar Donetsk can not be over-looked as a just ragtag club from war-town Ukraine. Instead, this match needs to be treated with a lot of determination, energy and as a chance to make up for the horrible game last weekend v Bournemouth. Pride in on the line. The Emirates Stadium faithful and all of Gunner Nation deserve a first-class performance. Period.
It looks like Jurrien Timber and Bukayo Saka will be in the stands for this one, however, Mikel Arteta knows the “next man up” concept will be so important in all competitions during this very long and difficult season. Because several of your key stars are sidelined leaves no excuse for a dismal performance against any club, especially on your home pitch.
This needs to be a show of force, a complete and total rebound from Saturday’s horrible performance.
Oh yes, and let’s keep 11 players on the pitch for the full 90 minutes. Please!
