The January transfer window is closed, but stories are already flying around London that Arsenal will have a big war chest to spend this summer.
Fact or fiction?
The Sun reported in today’s paper the Gunners could have as much as $245-million (USD) to lay-out on summer signings. According to the publication, Dominic Calvin-Lewin, Ruben Neves and Alexander Isak will be Mikel Arteta and Jaspar Edu’s top priorities. The Gunners will need to sign replacements as the contracts for Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah expire this summer. And of course, the Gunners one-time scoring wizard Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is now in Barcelona after having a dismal end to his time in north London. So, who will be our center forwards next season?
Other questions remains as well. What are the futures for Arteta, and for Edu? Will either man see a contract extension if the Gunners fail to qualify for at least the Europe League in 2022/2023? If I owned this club, the answer would be no. Arsenal is too big of a club, too rich in its history, and has a fan base too dedicate to this club to see anything less than Europa League next season. Without signing a striker in the January transfer window, I am worried Arsenal might not have enough weapons to get the job done. Yes, a top four finish would be ideal, but with this current squad, a top 6 finish would be terrific.
I know it’s hard to really compare American football with European football, but please allow me this one opportunity. The Cincinnati Bengals were just 2-14 two seasons ago. They were pitiful, and outclassed on the field week after week. Now, in just 9 days, they will be battling the LA Rams in the NFL’s Super Bowl. How did they make this turnaround so quickly? Well, they looked at their team as saw where they needed to fix it. So, they cut loose their marginal players, brought in talented athletes, found some leadership in the team, and here they are, potential World Champions!
On the flip side, Arsenal seems only able to fix one problem at a time. We needed better defense, so we brought in Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu. The year before we needed midfield help, so we signed Thomas Partey. During the Arteta reign, the manager has failed to sign a forward, so here we are, scoring only 1 goal the entire month of January. In 2021/2022, the Gunners have been shutout by Brentford, Chelsea, Manchester City, Brighton and Hove, Liverpool (3 times), Nottingham Forest and Burnley.
When the opportunity arises to sign new players, clubs need to look at the entire picture of their squad. Yes, a terrific defensive record is necessary, but you also need to score goals to stand any chance of competing on the big stages.
So, where do we go from here? With 17 Premier League matches remaining on the schedule, each game is seriously a must win. The Gunners can not afford any slip-ups against the weaker clubs, nor can they fail to show up and flounder against the squads above them in this league.
Was the January transfer window a flop for the Arsenal Football Club? Obviously, only time will tell if we have enough talent on this team to get the job done, and do we have the right men calling the shots?
For all our sakes, I really hope so.
