We heard nothing but crickets from the Gunners in January

We waited and waited and waited, and as the clock slowly ticked closer to the 6 pm EST deadline, all we heard from north London was crickets.

Now, after taking a few hours to digest the disappointment, I have come to the realization Arsenal’s lack of big name signings in January came down to the following scenarios.

#1 – Mikel Arteta and Gaspar Edu believe they already had enough talent to qualify for the Europa Conference League next season.

#2 – Stan Kroenke totally forgot about Arsenal in January as our owner put all of his focus on his Los Angeles Rams and hosting the Super Bowl at his SoFi Stadium in LA.

#3 – Edu and Arteta couldn’t convince a top flight striker to sign with the Gunners. Dusan Vlahovic used Arsenal as a bargaining chip with Juventus, while Alexander Isak only came to London this week to trick the Arsenal faithful into believing he would actually sign with the Gunners on Deadline Day.

#4 – The club didn’t want to spend any money. Maybe they’re saving it for a big spending spree in the summer, or maybe Stan needs new seat cushions at SoFi Stadium?

#5 – Maybe, all the club really cared about was getting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang off the books in January.

#6 – Or, just maybe the club forgot there was a transfer window in January. Again, we heard nothing but crickets from the Gunners in January.

The Gunners now have an active senior team roster of only 21 players (18 outfielders and 3 goalkeepers), plus, our only remaining strikers (Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah) are both out of contract on June 30th.

The Gunners have 17 Premier League matches to go. Without Cup matches or a European competition to worry about, it seems the club has nothing else to do but focus on finishing as a high in the league as possible.

Maybe too, even Nicolas Pepe will be given another opportunity by Arteta. Pepe had a solid AFCON, scoring twice and providing one asset for his Ivory Coast national team.

I don’t mean to be so full of doom and gloom today, however, I was hopeful we would sign a striker, and maybe even a midfielder, in January to help strengthen the squad for the remaining 17 match run-in.

Yes, I will keep the faith, and keep waiting for the club’s return to action as we still have 9 more days before facing the Wolverhampton Wanderers.

  2. Typical Arsenal transfer window. No top line striker is going to join us when Arteta plays with only one striker. Strikers like to score goals Arteta just doesn’t get it. The top clubs play with 3 strikers or 2 strikers and a AM.
