Many Arsenal supporters, including yours truly, did not give Mikel Arteta enough credit that he could possibly turn things around and make us competitive once again at the Arsenal Football Club.

On August 28, 2022, I write this following the Gunners humiliating loss to Man City…

“Does anyone out there really believe Mikel Arteta can turn this mess around? I’m now 100% convinced he can not, and that a change should be made now, not in October or November or December, but now! This club has reached a new low, and a manager change has to be made. Today’s match v Man City was an embarrassment to the history of the club, to the supporters and to the great players who have worn the Arsenal crest in the past. It was humiliating, depressing, and downright painful to watch.”

On that same day Yankee Gooner also conducted a poll asking if Mikel Arteta should be sacked. The results: 86.5% said yes, and 13.5% said no.

So, at least I wasn’t alone regarding how I felt about the job Arteta was doing at that time. Now, I have to say, I am a little embarrassed to have jumped the gun so early in the season.

Mikel Arteta has proven all of us wrong. Here we are in 4th place. Even a lot of football experts and pundits believe the Gunners can hang on and finish 4th.

Overall in his Arsenal career, Arteta has 68 wins, 20 draws and 32 defeats. That’s a 62% winning record. He’s also been named the Premier League Manager of the Month twice this season.

For me, his only issue is the fact that he has a very hard time beating the Big 5. This season alone, the Gunners are 1-1-7 in all comps v Man City, Man United, Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea. This is Arteta’s Achilles Heel, and the one he needs rectify if he wants to win major trophies in the years to come.

However, all things aside, we still need to believe in the process.
