Tell me there isn’t a double standard being set in the Premier League when it comes to red cards.
Here’s the burning question. When is a red card, a red card? If Eddie Nketiah’s tackle was worthy of a red card, why wasn’t Jamie Vardy’s?
After Tuesday’s match v Leicester City, Mikel Arteta said, “What I’m saying is if you review incidents of that type you should review them all. If Eddie’s is a red card then for sure the other is a red card.”
Arteta is referring to the harsh tackle Jamie Vardy put on Shkrodan Musfai late in the first half. The German defender has two cleat marks embedded in his face to prove Vardy’s studs came in high and dangerous. There was no sideline monitor review and no red card for this incident, and apparently there will be no punishment from the FA for Jamie Vardy despite the obvious damage he caused to the Arsenal man’s face. Come on!
Now, in all honesty, for me Eddie deserved to be sent off. I thought his attempt to get to the ball was flagrant and beyond the line, and a red card was in order.
Referee Chris Kavanaugh ran to the sideline monitor to confirm the decision. Okay, but why wasn’t this done for the Vardy incident that left Mustafi bleeding on the pitch?
If Vardy had been sent off, the Foxes would have played with 10 men from the 42nd minute, and who knows, maybe the Gunners might have won the game.
These decisions by the referee and VAR have consequences, and someone needs to take responsibility for making fair and equal calls during the match. On what basis did the referee and VAR have for not giving Vardy a red card?
Eddie didn’t hurt anyone, but Vardy did hurt someone. In my opinion, this is a double standard.
The more I think about this and review the game footage, the more pissed I become. Points for every club at this juncture of the season are critical, and this is no time for double standards, blatant mistakes, or should I even say, favoritism!
FIFA, UEFA, FA and the Premier League need to get it together to make sure actions and conditions for red cards are consistent, fair, and equal for every club and every player!
