It goes without saying that Manchester City and Liverpool have become the cream of the crop, not only in England, but in European football as well. The famous El Classico between Real Madrid and Barcelona its now being challenged by another match-up that is quickly becoming its own El Classico, Manchester City v Liverpool.
Case in point. The two clubs sit one and two on top of the current Premier League table. They have played each other in the league twice this season, and have consecutive 2-2- draws. They will match-up again this weekend in the FA Cup’s semifinal at Wembley Stadium. Then, if the football gods agree, these two could potentially face each other in the Champions League final in late May.
Personally, I’ve always been an admirer of El Classico matches, missing very few. The quality of play from the two Spanish giants is usually quite extraordinary. However, watching the the England powerhouses play is like watching Mohammed Ali and Joe Frazier in the famous “Rumble in the Jungle.” Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have formed two very special football teams, who slug it out and refuse to lose.
Why do I write this post? Well, I dream of the day when Arsenal could reach this level. Is it possible? I don’t know, but I want top believe that it could happen. With the very young and talented team we currently have, is this a good enough foundation to achieve the quality of Manchester and Liverpool? Is Mikel Arteta the man to put it all together? We have seen glimpses of that potential this season, however, we have also seen the exact opposite as well. Is Gaspar Edu the right guy to bring in the necessary world class talent needed to achieve such lofty goals?
The easy answer is this – only time will tell. However, the tough question is this – how long will it take? A spot in next season’s Champions League would be a major boost. It would attract some top quality players we otherwise couldn’t get. It would put more cash into the Arsenal treasury to help buy those players, and it would also give our supporters the huge lift we have been waiting for over the past five seasons.
So, over the next few weeks enjoy Arsenal’s run-in, but also pay close attention to the English version of El Classico because it will surely provide some memorable moments, that at this point Arsenal fans can only dream.
