Now that Joan Laporte has been elected as the new president of FC Barcelona, what does this mean for the future of two current Gunners?
Laporte has publicly stated, if elected, he would want to bring both Mikel Arteta and Hector Bellerin to the Spanish giants. Now, that the election is over, will Laporte make good on his statements and attempt to follow through? My guess is yes.
Mikel Arteta has stated he is currently happy at Arsenal and wants to continue improving this club, however Barcelona is also his boyhood club, one of the biggest in all of the world, plus every manager’s dream to manage.
We still have a few months left in this season, and Arteta’s future could be determined for him if things go bad for the AFC, and if European football is not in the cards for next season. Laporte might not need to put too much pressure on Arteta if the wolves come knocking at his door in late May.
Bellerin, on the other hand, will probably make the move, no matter how this season ends for the Gunners. After seven seasons in London, the right fullback should pack his bags and move on, taking his football skills to another big club, in another big league. Plus, his Arsenal contract expires in the summer of 2022, and I don’t see Arsenal letting him leave on a free transfer at that time. We’ve down that road too many time before.
So, we have another twist to potentially follow in the months ahead.
Will Arsenal be looking for a new right fullback? Yes
Will Arsenal be looking for a new manager? Maybe
