On August 1, 2019, 24-year-old Nicolas Pepe arrived in London as the most expensive transfer signing in Arsenal club history. Gooners went crazy with the expectation our new #19 would consistently find the back of the net. After all, Pepe had scored 35 goals over the last two years as a striker for Lille in France’s Ligue 1.
Unfortunately, reality hasn’t matched those expectations. The young star from the Ivory Coast has scored just 3 goals this campaign for the Gunners. Far below what everyone had expected.
So, what’s wrong? Well, just yesterday Arsenal great Thierry Henry put it in perspective with the following comments about Pepe:
“When you arrive like that, you’re always going to be talked about, and people are always going to target you. He needs to make sure he doesn’t listen to that and go out and perform. People need to forget about the price tag. He didn’t ask to be bought for that amount of money himself. It’s not always easy to arrive in a team, adapt to a new style of play. The Premier League, as we know it, is not the same as the French League or any other league, by the way. So he needs adapt to that. We need to give him time.”
Those are some very wise words from a very smart footballer. In my opinion, Pepe has all of the tools to become a star at Arsenal. Just his ability alone to attack a defense with speed, agility and amazing ball skills is proof enough for me.
Be patient Gooners, Nicolas Pepe will soon be providing goals…and lots of them!
