Could the Premier League resume in July? A report from London says it will.

There is a report surfacing tonight in London that the FA, EFL and Premier League are planning to resume the season in July…behind closed doors!

According to the exclusive information reported by football.london, the season would cover a four to six week period. Obviously, the goal is to finish each of the league seasons, and domestic cup competitions as well before the 2020-2021 season begins. Obviously, the British government and their health authorities will have to weigh in to determine if conditions are safe for players to return to the pitch.

Being realistic, it hard to imagine football resuming before at least June, if not July. However, the problem is the large numbers of fixtures these teams will be required to play in a short period of time followed by getting prepared for an entire new season after that! It’s a lot to believe, but stranger things have happened.

They FA would have to consider dropping some of the current domestic competitions, like the Carabao Cup, to make the schedule work. You would also have to believe the 2020-2021 season would not have a winter break, and that international breaks would be eliminated. Also, remember the European Championships have already been moved to June, 2021. Talk about a Festival of Football! Games would be non-stop, 24/7/365!

This would also throw the entire summer transfer window into chaos. And, what about players whose contracts expire on June 30th? That’s a lot of issues to be resolved, but that’s why these executives get the big bucks, right?

There has been no official reports or statements from these governing bodies or from any of the clubs involved confirming any such plan exists, but what we do know is these groups are meeting on April 3rd to detail proposals for the rest of this season.

Just yesterday, the head of UEFA, Aleksander Ceferin told Italy’s La Repubblica, “We could start again in mid-May, in June or even late June. Any time after that and the season will probably be lost.” He went on to say, “There is also a proposal to end this season at the beginning of the next one and then start the next one a little later.”

Sounds like mixed messages to me from the various football powers.

As always, all we supporters can do is sit back, have a pint, and wait for the big shots to let us know the real story!

Cheers, and stay healthy!
