What will December bring for Mikel Arteta and the Gunners?

Over the past three season, December has been less than cheery for Arsenal and their supporters. In fact it has been more like a lump of coal found at the bottom of your holiday stocking than anything else.

To make my point, here is a rundown of the Gunners last three Decembers (includes all competitions)…

2017-2018: 4 wins, 4 draws, 1 defeat

2018-2019: 4 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats

2019-2020: 1 win, 4 draws and 3 defeats

Total for last three Decembers: 9 wins, 10 draws and 7 defeats, or 37 from 81 points.

December is always a pivotal month as the Premier League reaches its halfway mark and the European group stages come to an end. The fixture list becomes more congested, as matches come thick and fast over the 31 day stretch. With the Arsenal club currently floundering for goals, wins and points, the ingredients for a successful December don’t look promising. Plus, don’t forget this is 2020, so anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Thank you Mr. Murphy.

For Mikel Arteta, I’m afraid he will lose the confidence of more supporters if December doesn’t go his way. For a team that ended last season, and began this one, with hope and excitement, the fizzle has died and the hashtags are already shouting, #Artetaout

In my opinion, it’s too early for such nonsense, however, my mood could change if December becomes that lump of coal in my Christmas stocking.

I’m afraid we can’t count on a January transfer or two to save the season right now, so December becomes a make or break month for this club. A poor December like last year and the Gunners will find themselves in the relegation discussion as we head into 2021.

Happy Holidays, or bah humbug?
