Arsenal…the Jekyll and Hyde of football

What has been a rollercoaster season for Arsenal, hit the bottom of the big hill on Saturday as the Gunners imploded in the second half and were throttled by Liverpool 3-0 on the Emirates Stadium pitch.

For whatever reason I can’t explain, this club lacks the ability, or talent, to play with consistency from match-to-match, or in recent cases, from half to half.

We have seen Arsenal at their best (v Chelsea, Tottenham and West Ham), and we have see our club at their worst (v Aston Villa twice and Liverpool).

Which of these two clubs is the real Arsenal? He hope the first, but fear the latter.

This season is not done and dusted by any means, however, Mikel Arteta has to find a solution to keep this club from crumbling like they did on Saturday. The good news is we have a fairly meek run-in schedule in the Premier League, and the Europa League could be our one ticket to achieving a positive season, however, if the second half team from yesterday shows up in any or all of these matches, it will be a long off-season for the Arsenal Football Club, and a cloud of doubt will surely hang over the manager and his staff.

Arteta had this to say after the match ended, “First of all, I apologise to our supporters for the display and the show that we saw today that I am very, very disappointed about. When you don’t do the basics right against a team like Liverpool, you don’t have any chance even to complete in the game, which is exactly what happened. It’s unacceptable. At that level it’s unacceptable. To not be at 100% is unacceptable to our people and for a lot of work that we put in so what happened today is nowhere near what we want to do.” [‘courtesy of Arsenal Media]

How many times have we heard this at the end of matches? Too many, I’m afraid.

The Gunners have now lost 12 Premier League games tis season, which is the highest total in club history.

So, Arteta and his squad need to lick their wounds and get back on the horse quickly. A quarterfinal Europa League match v Slovia Prague awaits on Thursday.
