Right out of the blue, the Gunners are in the final stages of signing a new midfielder named Vieira to join the club this summer.
This Vieira is 22-year-old Fabio Vieira who will be joining the Gunners from FC Porto in Portugal.
For the past few months, we have seen countless names of targeted midfielders discussed, tossed about and analyzed. However, the Arsenal front office kept Vieira’s name a complete secret, and completely off the media’s radar. And boy, what a surprise he is. After watching his highlight reel, it’s hard not to be excited about the Gunners new attacking midfielder. He is left footed, extremely deadly from the penalty spot, a gifted passer, and has a bag of tricks and flicks to frustrate his defenders.
Vieira is 5′ 7″ tall and scored 7 goals in 39 matches in all competitions for FC Porto last season. He also contributed 16 assists. The young Portuguese has also enjoyed success playing with his homeland’s Under-21 and Under-19 national teams.
Though Vieira needs work on his defensive skills, as well as learning to pass the ball off quicker, from where I sit, he will be a terrific addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad for the coming season. Fabio will probably not be an immediate starter, but he will add needed depth to a midfield that faces a heavy fixture list ahead.
Let’s hope the deal gets done quickly so the young man can get to work with his teammates on June 27th!
Cheers.
