As the coronavirus continues to smack most regions of the world, football executives are still trying to determine if this season can be saved. The underlying problem, no one knows when the pandemic will end, or when will it be appropriate to allow supporters safely back into stadiums once again.
According to an interview by the head of UEFA, this season can still be saved.
Aleksander Ceferin told Italy’s La Repubblica, “We could start again in mid-May, in June or even late June. Any time after that and the season will probably be lost.” He went on to say, “There is also a proposal to end this season at the beginning of the next one and then start the next one a little later.”
So, where do we go from here?
Personally, I think all domestic cups and European tournaments need to be cancelled. At this point of the calendar year, the domestic leagues should take full precedent. All Premier League teams have either 9 or 10 game remaining. Several of those teams are still competing in the FA Cup, and/or in one of the European competitions. That’s just too many matches to squeeze into a short period of time. Even to accomplish finishing the Premier League schedule, clubs would have to play either Saturday and Tuesday or Sunday and Wednesday for 5 consecutive weeks. I think the players would revolt if the fixture list got any more aggressive than that.
Now, what happens if the Premier League season is scrapped? I’m not a supporter of Liverpool in any way, however, to see them denied of the Premier League title would be a tough pill for their supporters to swallow. Eventhough they have an uncatchable 25 point lead over second place Manchester City, you can’t give them the title and forget about the other 19 teams. Here’s why. What happens to the clubs fighting to avoid relegation, or to the teams who still have a shot at a Top 4 or Top 5 spot? If you freeze the current table with so many games remaining these teams will get screwed.
If the season was to be frozen as it currently stands, here’s what the European spots and teams to be relegated for 2020-2021 would look like…
Champions League…Liverpool, Leicester City, Chelsea, Manchester United. (Manchester City is suspended from European competition)
Europa League….Wolves, Tottenham Hotspur
Relegation…Bournemouth, Aston Villa, Norwich City
So, if Liverpool is given the title, everyone else gets the shaft!
No doubt, Liverpool has had an extraordinary season, but the Premier League can not just favor them and let the rest pick up the crumbs. There is still a lot of football to be played, and I think the season would have to deemed null and void if it can’t continue. The table would look a lot different after all 38 games are played compared to the way it looks today. Not only that, some teams have tougher run-ins than others. Nothing would be equal if they froze the current table and said that’s that. I’m afraid the credibility of the Premier League would be damaged for many years to come. Clubs would be hurt financially and supporters would lose faith in the integrity of the game they love.
To summarize…
Either complete the entire 38 game schedule, or cancel the season and make it null and void. No promotions, no relegations, and use the 2018-2019 final table to determine European places for the 2020-2021 season. At least that season was finished on a level playing field.
