January is a month all Arsenal supporters hope to soon forget. I mean, what a disaster.
The Gunners January record: 0 wins, 2 draws and 3 defeats, includes 4 consecutive shutouts, and only one goalscorer bu an Arsenal player the entire month. Bukayo Saka’s 31st minute goal v Manchester City on January 1st was the last time any Gunner found the back of the net. Abysmal. Oh, and let’s not forget the Gunners also bowed out of both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup in January, just to add insult to injury.
I’m never one to be grateful for international breaks, however, this one couldn’t get here fast enough.
Defensively, Arsenal had a good month in January, allowing only 5 goals in 5 games, including 2 clean sheets. HOWEVER, Mikel Arteta’s squad has again become basically incompetent at the other end of the pitch when it comes to scoring goals.
The Burnley game was horrible on many levels. First, the Clarets are the 20th place club in the Premier League, and second, Mikel Arteta was still able to field a quality squad even without Takehiro Tomiyasu Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka being unavailable. The lads controlled possession throughout the match, however, their ability to break down the Burnley defense and slot home a game winner was again missing from Arteta’s game plan.
Some how, some way, Arsenal remains 6th place in the league, and only 2 points out of 4th place. With 17 PL matches yet to play, there is still hope, but it seems like it’s hanging by a very thin thread.
The Gunners now have 17 days to recover, regroup and regain the confidence they showed in December, and hopefully, they will have short memories when it comes to January.
