Are the wheels turning at Arsenal to send 19-year-old defender William Saliba back out on loan?
The French publication, Oest-France, is reporting Rennes and the Gunners are having those exact talks about Saliba.
Since the young Brazilian came to Arsenal this summer, his playing time has been limited to friendlies against MK Dons and West Ham United. He is yet to play even one second during any of the Gunners opening six matches this season.
Prior to his arrival in London, the highly-heralded player was predicted to make an immediate impact on the Gunners defense, however, Gabriel has seemed to taken that spotlight away from Saliba.
Saliba played last season on loan in Ligue 1 for Saint-Etienne.
Mikel Arteta spoke about Saliba to Arsenal.com, “Well as I explained, the difficult year that the player had and the plan that we had for him, for the transition year, we could not achieve. We are looking at different options to try to have the best possible development for the player and to protect our intentions with William for the future. We want to both be aligned and make the best decision for now and for the future.”
I think this means in manager speak, “the guy is going out on loan to gain more playing time experience.” It looks like Saliba’s transition year will be this year.
In my opinion, if he is not ready for the rough and tumble Premier League, than a loan move would be a terrific idea. We can be confident the young man will become a solid player for the Gunners in the future, however, it looks like we might have too wait awhile longer to see that happen.
Arteta is smart like a fox, so we can assume any move he makes will be calculated to benefit Saliba’s future with the north London club.
