Good news, UK prime minister Boris Johnson has now confirmed that football supporters can return to stadiums beginning May 17th at the earliest. Speaking in the House of Commons the prime minister confirmed that he will allow up to 10,000 supporters or 25 per cent of capacity, whichever is the smaller, back inside grounds.
This is terrific news for English football fans, since grounds have been empty for the past few months, since the resurgence of the coronavirus.
I don’t know about you, but I am so tired of watching matches played in front of empty seats. Football, like all athletic events, is made to be played in front of living, breathing human beings. Obviously, COVID-19 has changed our world the past year. Human contact has been deemed dangerous, quarantines and isolations have been the norm, and our ability to celebrate together has been quieted by this horrible pandemic.
So, with the prime minister’s most recent announcement, there is again a glimmer of hope that supporters will once more be allowed to cheer, chant or curse their favorite club. To hear the singing in a football stadium will be music to our ears!
Cheers (no pun intended).
