As we look across the European football landscape, one thing is clear – there is no clarity. It’s a kaleidoscope of uncertainty and doubt.
Some domestic leagues have been cancelled, others have resumed training, while others remain in limbo.
In England, both the Premier League and the Championship have resumed training. Today, the English government’s health officials opened the door for small groups of 12 to have close-contqct training. This is a big step towards their next step – announcing a restart date.
During this week the league, players, managers, and everyone else involved with Project Restart will hold various group meetings to discuss the next phase of the plan. These meetings will include such topics as close-contact training, player concerns, testing, and how to handle venues. They will also discuss what a curtailment of the season would look like.
If all goes well by the end of the week, there could be a vote on when to restart the season, and to release a proposed fixture list.
There is no doubt the men and women leading these discussions are being smart, cautious, and even optimistic. Germany and their Bundesliga have already proven a safe reboot of the season is possible, yet even one of Germany’s bordering neighbors, France, pulled the plug on their professional seasons a few weeks ago. There is a lot to consider, and I for one am glad they are taking their time. A decision, one way or the other, could have long term damaging consequences. However, as I have written here many times before – the clock is ticking.
For the women, however, the English professional football the season is over. As announced today by the FA, there was no way forward to make it work.
So, while that’s all happening in the foreground, other potentially big news is happening in the background. Multiple sources, including the player’s own agent, are saying Philippe Coutinho is currently holding negotiations with Arsenal Football Club. The Barcelona midfielder (on loan at Bayern Munich) has also been rumored to being courted by Chelsea, Newcastle, Tottenham and Everton, but because Coutinho’s agent is a lifelong Arsenal fan, the Gunners are currently at the front of the line. The whole key to this deal will be money, money, and more money. Coutinho is currently making a reported $303,000 (USD) per week. That’s a lot of hay for Arteta and his chiefs to bale over the next few months while also trying to improve the squad in other areas. Off-loading Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang might make this deal look a little better for the bottom line.
Personally, I’m on the fence with Coutinho. Is he the same player we saw at Liverpool, or is he the one we saw play at Barcelona? They are not the same player, so Arsenal needs to be careful as to which Coutinho they are getting before making a signing of this worth.
