Guendouzi and Ozil…Arsenal’s newest enigmas

While their teammates were securing a 2-0 win yesterday over Southampton, Matteo Guendouzi was doing his Houdini impersanation, and Mesut Ozil looked more like Mary Poppins than a world-class footballer.

What the heck is going on behind the scenes at Arsenal football?

Now, I totally understand the Matteo Guendouzi disappearing act. I think he’s in the boss’s doghouse after his post-match bust-up at Brighton. However, after Thursday’s match Mikel Arteta said Guendouzi’s absence was not a punishment, but a squad management decision. Then later he said, “Whatever issue we have internally, I will resolve it in a private way. I explained that I cannot explain and that’s it.” Sounds to me like Arteta is displeased with the French midfielder right now. As I wrote after the Brighton game, I support players who stand up for their teammates, but when their actions ultimately hurt the team, then they’ve crossed the line.

One of the strangest sights you’ll ever see at a sporting event anywhere in the world took place yesterday at St. Mary’s in Southampton. There was Mesut Ozil, a former World Cup winner and international football star, sitting in the stands under a red Arsenal umbrella. Now, he wasn’t the only Gunner looking for shade, but he was the only one of that group who never made it to the pitch. Will someone please tell us what is going on? Is he not fit, is he not interested, is he not training hard, he is not as good as the other 16 who did play, he is being kept healthy so he can be transferred out, or has Mikel Arteta just given up on the German? Which is it? Or is it something else?

For some reason Arsenal tends to bring this type of drama along for the ride too often. As a fan, it’s frustrating to sit here and get no information. I mean come on. Ozil is not a 2nd or 3rd team player. He is the highest-paid and most decorated lad on the squad. How about letting us know what is going on between Ozil and Arteta? Give us something so we can digest it, and then forget about it and move on. If Ozil is done as an Arsenal player, than I think we have some right to betold.

Inquiring minds want to know.

Cheers, and stay healthy and safe!

  1. Ozil need to leave our club. What is happening with him is absolutely right, and if an Arsenal faithful don’t agree that individual is not an Arsenal faithful. Regards Guendouzi, our coach is handling it totally wrong. He wants the player out and all the big clubs wants the player, so he can’t manage a kid. We really have a poor coach. Yes the kid is absolutely an idiot at times, but a good coach so manage that and make sure the kid is still full of confidence and ready to play. Look at City, Walker break the lockdown rules twice, but they manage the situations, at the end both parties were happy. Arsenal is in trouble, manage, coach & recruit weak.

  2. I agree that Guendouzi has worn out his welcome and needs to go. Too bad. The kid has potential. Regarding Ozil, I’m not sure about him. With Saka and others filling that role I guess his time has past. I really don’t think we ever got our total value from him.
Now Arteta. I think he is still trying to learn how to manage off the field BS. If the same kind of thing is still happening 6 months from now, then I agree, a change would be required, especially if we haven’t progressed on the pitch.
This week’s signings also troubles me, especially Luiz. Either we can’t afford to pay more good players, or our front office is just plain stupid!
