The ICC has become a really good preseason set-up for many of the world’s best clubs. Arsenal has been in several of these tournaments, competing in both Asia and the United States. Unfortunately, the ICC is yet one more event to be cancelled in the coming months due to COVID-19.
Relevant Sports chief executive officer Danny Silman made the statement today, “We are heartbroken for the thousands who have succumbed to the awful Covid-19 disease, and our thoughts are with everyone who’s been impacted during this difficult time. The health and safety of players, staff, fans, and all who are involved in our matches is always paramount. The lack of clarity of when social distancing and shelter-in-place restrictions will be lifted and the uncertain international football calendar with the potential for European domestic leagues and UEFA tournaments being played into August, means planning a men’s International Champions Cup this summer is unfeasible.”
Relevant Sports is still hoping to play the women’s version of the tournament this summer.
The International Champions Cup first rolled out in 2013.
Cheers, and stay healthy.
