As a longtime Gooner, I have a serious concern.
In recent years, and probably long before that, the Gunners have been deep at the goalkeeper position.
As it stands right now, I’m not so sure we have the necessary depth at that position, and here’s why.
The Gunners’ two back-up keepers are Runar Runarsson and Matt Macey.
Neither player has any Premier League experience. Zero.
Runnarsson, who played his last two seasons in France, made 36 appearances for Dijon during that stretch.
Macey, who has been with Arsenal since 2013 (mostly on loan to other clubs), has made only one start for the Gunners, and that was an EFL Cup 4th round tie.
That’s why I’m concerned.
Last season, when #1 keeper Bernd Leno went down with an injury, we had Emiliano Martinez in the wings. Even though he didn’t have a lot of Premier League experience up to that point, he did have a lot of domestic cup and Europa League games under his belt. He was so better equipped to step in than what he have today.
I mean, If Leno would go down (heaven forbid), Arsenal would have two young keepers minding the net with limited “big time” experience to draw from.
Now, I understand why Martinez had to go for the sake of his own career, however, the Gunners should have found a more experienced #2 to back-up Leno in the transfer market.
So far, Leno has started every Arsenal match this season, which only increases his chance for injury, and with this team on the rise, I feel Arsenal’s transfer strategy in the goalkeeping market might come back to haunt us.
It’s obvious Arteta might feel the same way since neither player saw any action in the two Carabao Cup matches played earlier in the season.
Am I worried for nothing?
