Villarreal manager Unai Emery has once again delivered a Europa League trophy to his club. Three times for Sevilla, and now this one for the Yellow Submarine. Emery’s only Europa League finals flop was with Arsenal two years ago.
Whether you like him or dislike him, you have to give props to Emery’s ability to win this competition. No other manager has won the Europa League more times than Unai Emery.
Now, does this mean he is a better manager than his successor at Arsenal, Mikel Arteta. Probably not. Even though he has delivered Villarreal into next season’s Champions League, his club still finished 7th this season in La Liga.
At the end of the day, Emery was a negative influence on the Arsenal club. Whether it was his lack of English, his treatment of Mesut Ozil, or his overall inability to unite and lead the players, Emery was a flop at Arsenal.
On the other side of the coin, Arteta has won a FA Cup and a Community Shield, and he did bring this season’s Arsenal club very close to qualifying for a European competition. Has he been a total success – no. Has he been a flop – no.
Arteta inherited a team that was torn apart, and beaten down. He has done a good job improving the culture and the spirit within the club. Now, he has an extremely important transfer window to navigate. Players will come, and players will go, however, he needs to make sure the right players come, and the right players go.
I guess the jury is still out.
