There’s was a lot to digest following yesterday’s match.
First and foremost, the Gunners lost 0-1 to Jamie Vardy and Leicester City.
Second, Arsenal is now in 10th place in the Premier League table.
Third, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s Premier League’s scoring drought stands at five games.
Fourth, Alexandre Lecazette’s goal should have counted even though VAR said he blocked the goalkeeper’s vision.
And fifth, Thomas Partey didn’t make many mistakes, but he didn’t contribute much to the offense either.
Accept for the one big mistake which lead to Vardy’s goal, the Gunner defense looked pretty solid most of the day. Gabriel played another strong game, but was hampered when David Luiz went down with the injury. Shkodran Mustafi came in to replace Luiz, but failed to provide enough support to help keep a clean sheet.
Mikel Arteta told Arsenal.com after the game, “I think the team started really well. We had a really good first half against a really low block but they’re a team that has the ability to play and open you up as well. We didn’t allow that to happen, we were really aggressive, we won every duel, we were a threat. I think we created enough chances in the first half to be in front. Certainly we scored a goal, I don’t know how that wasn’t allowed. In the second half, it was about being patient, waiting for the right moments, they were just waiting for our mistake.”
Not to make excuses, however, the Gunners were also coming off two consecutive road games, which is never easy. This week things don’t get any easier. Arsenal has a Europa League home game v Dundalk on Thursday, and then an away match in Manchester v United on Sunday.
Two things to be concerned about…
1) With the injury to Luiz, the Gunners are even thinner on the back line. Rob Holding and Pablo Mari are still recovering from injuries, Calum Chambers is still working on getting his fitness back, Sokratis is inactive to play in Premier League games, and who really knows the status of William Saliba. So that leaves Mustafi to fill the defensive gap. Here’s the question yet to be answered: Which Mustafi do we get? The Mustafi of old, or the more improved version from last season? After watching his performance on Sunday, the jury is still out on that question
2) Arsenal’s lack of goals and goal scoring opportunities is also a major concern. I think Partey needs to be put into a more offensive-minded midfield role. The front line still lacks a creative midfielder to help establish chances in front of goal. Something needs to get fixed here, and quick.
It’s too early to panic, however, the Gunners have lost two PL games in a row, and now have a 3-0-3 league record.
We need to get it back on track this week, especially at Man United!
