Kepa is Arsenal’s first transfer signing of summer

At just 30 years old, Kepa Arrizabalaga arrives at Arsenal with a wealth of experience, a winning mentality, and a story that’s taken him from the Basque coast to the heart of London’s football scene.

Born in Ondarroa, a small fishing village in the Basque Country, Kepa joined Athletic Bilbao’s renowned academy at the age of 10. He then climbed through the ranks—Basconia, Bilbao Athletic, and became a senior player after loan spells at both Ponferradina and Real Valladolid. He made his first-team debut at 21 years old on September 2016.

Kepa is a life-long goalkeeper.

In August 2018, Chelsea paid around $97.5- million (USD) to sign Kepa, making him the most expensive goalkeeper in history at that time. His years in west London were a rollercoaster ride. At the top end he won the Europa League (2019), Champions League (2021), and both UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup (2021). But on the down side his inconsistent form and errors led to him losing his spot to Edouard Mendy, and later alternating in squad roles

Seeking to play more, Kepa moved on loan to Real Madrid in 2023/2024. He played 20 league matches and contributed to Real’s La Liga and Champions League championships. However, the following season he moved to Bournemouth on loan, where he reclaimed form with 35 appearances and eight clean sheets—helping Bournemouth to their joint-best defensive record .

Then, on July 1st, Arsenal officially announced Kepa’s signing away from Chelsea after triggering his $6.9-million (USD) release clause. He signed a three-year contract, and is taking the #13 shirt. Kepa will set-up to be the back up to first-choice keeper David Raya.

Manager Mikel Arteta praised Kepa’s hunger, professionalism, and the edge his winning mentality will bring to the Gunners team.

Keep told reporters, “I’m really, really happy to be here. The ambition that is shown in this club. Hopefully, altogether, we can achieve it.”

This is a good, logical move for Arsenal. Kepa brings a Champions League pedigree, familiarity with Arsenal players like Havertz, and a lot of resilience seen from him after bouncing back at Bournemouth. Plus, the $6.9-million (USD) fee for someone of his pedigree is widely seen as a good move by the Gunners.

Kepa Arrizabalaga’s journey is one of highs and lows: joining from Bilbao, record-breaking wealth, European trophies, loans, and redemption at Bournemouth. Now, at Arsenal, he returns to London with humility and purpose. With his experience, ambition, and unique background, he’s poised to be a key part of another title charge at the Emirates.
