More postponements highlight Monday’s football headlines

European football was hit with two big announcements on Monday, one by UEFA, and the other by the Spanish Football Federation and La Liga.

First the UEFA announcement…
“As a result of the COVID-19 crisis in Europe, UEFA has today formally taken the decision to postpone the following matches, originally scheduled for May:

UEFA Women’s Champions League final
UEFA Europa League final
UEFA Champions League final

No decision has yet been made on rearranged dates. The working group, established last week as a result of the conference call among the stakeholders of European football, which was chaired by UEFA President, Aleksander Čeferin, will analyse the options available. The group has already begun its examination of the calendar. Announcements will be made in due course.”

And second, the joint statement from RFEF and La Liga…
“The Monitoring Commission established by the current RFEF-La Liga Coordination Agreement agrees the suspension of professional football competitions until the authorities of the Government of Spain and the General Administration of the State consider that they can be resumed without creating any health risk.”

The 2020 European Championships have already been postponed until next summer, while all domestic leagues remain on hold indefinitely with the outside hope of completing their league fixture lists by June 30th.

Numerous European football players, coaches and support staff are in quarantine after either being tested positive for the virus, or for being exposed to the virus. British Prime minister Boris Johnson has announced a “stay at home or be fined” decision to help tackle the coronavirus pandemic in his country.
