Let’s take a break from the on-going, unpredictable transfer market, FA Cup games and all the rest to discuss a story out of London that is very interesting.
A man named Stuart Morgan is in the midst of launching his own football club in London. He plans to call the club Dial Square FC, and has applied to compete next season in the Combined Counties League, the 9th tier of English football. Mr. Morgan and his group will have an answer on his request come February 1st. He thinks he has a 50/50 chance.
The Dial Square FC name is the first name of Arsenal FC when it was founded in 1886.
Now, what is his motivation behind such an endeavor? Do you remember earlier this season when several organized groups of disgruntled supporters launched a campaign called, “We care, do you?” These folks are sick and tired of Stan Kroenke’s lack of interest in Arsenal Football Club. Flat out, they just don’t like the way Stan runs the club. So, here comes Stuart Morgan who says Arsenal has become too commercial, and has lost its soul. He wants his news club to mimic the spirit and the feel of the original Arsenal.
Long story short, Dial Square FC have arranged a deal with Abbey Rangers in Surrey to play games on their ground during the 2020-2021 season. Morgan’s long range plan is to build a new stadium close to Arsenal’s original home of Woolrich. He hopes to complete the stadium within 15-20 years.
Morgan is using a similar model used by a group of their supporters to launch AFC Wimbledon in 2002 when Wimbledon FC moved and became MK Dons. The new AFC Wimbledon side has been promoted 6 times in 13 seasons and now competes in League One of the EFL. A truly remarkable story.
