Is today’s match in Prague Mikel Arteta’s potential Waterloo? That could be a stretch, however, Arteta has failed to deliver the type of season we expected back in September. The club has seriously underachieved, and a loss today would mean we would be stopped 3 games short of any hopes of qualifying for European football next season. If we are knocked out of this competition, it would be disastrous both financially and emotionally for this great club. And, since Arteta is in charge, he would have to take the burden of the blame.
The Gunners have to get to the semifinals, and hopefully, have a shot at the UEL title on May 26th!
Let’s look at our season. We are currently 9th in the Premier League, 29 points out of 1st place, 10 points out of 4th place, and 7 points out of 6th place. We have a very slim chance of qualifying for Europe through the PL this season.
We banged out of the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup earlier in the season, and even though we coasted through the group stage of the Europa League, we have since struggled to get to this point in this competition.
So, here we are, going into Prague tied 1-1, and down 1 away goal. Arsenal needs to win by at least one goal, or gain a 2-2 draw to advance to the semifinals. A 0-0 draw, and we go home empty handed.
Could this match in Prague be Arteta’s Waterloo? I think it could very well be if the Gunners fail to show up and fall to a club who compete in a much weaker league. Eventhough Slavia Prague has topped both Rangers and Leicester City in the UEL so far, on paper, Arsenal is the superior team. However, even superior teams must show up to win.
Will Arteta have this squad ready to compete today? They can’t just play…they will need compete, or else this season will go down among the worst in recent club history.
Personally, I think Arteta’s job should be on the line today, and yes, this time he should take responsibility if the Gunners fail to deliver.
Napoleon had Waterloo, Arteta could have Prague.

Mikel Arteta said on Friday Bukayo Saka, Riccardo Calafiori and Jurrien Timber are all in contention to be in the squad for Saturday’s match.
