Update: The coronavirus impact on European football and American sports


This story just keeps getting worse, and I fear there will be more bad news ahead.

Here’s the latest from European football…

La Liga has suspended all games in their top and second tiers for a minimum of two weeks.

The Italian Football Federation has said the Serie A season might not be concluded. Currently they are on hold until April 3rd.

Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 matches in France will be played behind closed doors until April 15th. The French Cup final on April 4th has also been postponed.

Eredivisie, Budseliga, and several other European domestic leagues games have also been postponed or moved behindd closed doors.

Real Madrid players have been put into self-imposed quarantine for a minimum of two weeks after a player on Real Madrid’s basketball team tested positive.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Aaron Ramsey and the Juventus team are also in quarantine after one of their teammates also tested positive.

Several international friendlies scheduled for the end of March could also be cancelled.

Wolves play Olympiacos in the Europa League Round of 16 today behind closed doors in Athens. Other Europe League games have either been postponed or are being played behind closed doors.

And, The London Times is reporting the English government and the Premier League could mandate upcoming games be played behind closed doors as well. The reports say this announcement could happen as early as today.

Here’s the latest from USA sports and the coronavirus…

The NBA has suspended all games until further notice.

The NCAA basketball tournament, known as March Madness, will only allow players’ families and necessary personnel into the arenas.

The MLS has suspended play until mid-April.

The NHL will make an announcement on Friday regarding their future plans.

Several colleges and universities have already cancelled their spring sports.

Anyway you shake it, the coronavirus will play havoc to this year’s sporting schedules. Will more games be suspended or cancelled, or will entire seasons come to a grinding halt? At this point, it’s anyone’s guess.
