Wouldn’t it be fun to be a fly on the wall when Edu and Arteta hold transfer talks?
As fans of the game, we watch the transfer headlines, links and rumors everyday while the window is open. It must be a complex and mind-blowing task to sell, to buy, to loan, or to pass on players. It’s easy for us on the outside to comment on their progress, or lack of it during each transfer window, however, imagine if you were the one trying to pull the strings and make the deals to strengthen your club. And, for Edu and Arteta, this window is one of the club’s most important in recent memory.
Who stays, who goes, and for how much?
Unfortunately for Edu and Arteta, one of the things going against them in this window is Arsenal’s lack of success in recent seasons. Mid-table league finishes, plus a lack of European competition in the coming season makes Arsenal less than attractive for the top tier player looking for a new place to hang his hat.
What Edu and Arteta can sell to players and agents is the fact this team is loaded with some very young and talented players, which could add up to a very promising future. Yes, the Gunners are a work in progress, but the selling point has to be, “are you willing to be a part of something special when Arsenal rises from the ashes and becomes a dominant force in European football once again?”
Some players could see this as a real opportunity to be part of something exciting, while others will snub our club because we lack European competition. I understand that. Every player wants to play in the top competitions, with the top players and the top clubs.
So, I don’t envy Edu and Arteta this summer, not at all. I can understand their plight and their struggle, but as fans of Arsenal, we are desparate to see movement. We are an impatient lot, with high expectations for our club.
Good luck, Edu and Arteta. You are between a rock and a hard place. Sure glad I’m not you.
Cheers.
