Premier League will start new season on September 12th

Earlier today in London, the Premier League Shareholders announced the 2020-2021 season will begin on September 12th, and conclude on May 23rd.

This will potentially give Arsenal 41 days off between the FA Cup Final and the Premier League opener on September 12th. However, this gap would be shortened if the Gunners win the FA Cup and face Liverpool in the Community Shield, which usually takes place at Wembley a week before the league season begins.

In their statement, the Premiere said “it will continue to consult the FA and EFL regarding the scheduling of all domestic competitions.”

The FA has already eliminated replays for next season, while the Carabao Cup could potentially be scrubbed next season to avoid a fixture congestion for the clubs in the top four divisions of English football.

As of now, the Premier League will probably start behind closed doors in September, but could transition to where spectators would be permitted in side the grounds on a socially-distanced only basis beginning on October 1st. Only time will tell on that idea.

I would assume the 2020-2021 league schedules will be released in early August.

Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion have already earned promotion to the PL from the Championship, while Swansea City, Cardiff City, Brentford and Fulham are currently in playoffs to determine the final promoted club.

On the relegation front, Norwich City has already faced the axe and will return to the Championship next season, while the fates of Aston Villa, Watford and Bournemouth will be decided on Sunday. Two of these three clubs will be relegated to the Championship.

Cheers, stay healthy and safe.
