Today I was planning to write a post on why Arsenal doesn’t go after a player like Robert Lewandowski. However, before I even had a chance to get to my computer, Barcelona goes right ahead and reportedly swoops him up.
According to The Mail and Mundo Deportivo, the Polish striker will could be signing a 3-year, $32.8-million (USD) contract with Barcelona. The reports indicate the only hitch is the deal can not be signed until Barca has unloaded enough players to fit Lewandowski’s new deal into their payroll. Lewandowski tuned down an offer from PSG in order to potentially land in Spain. Arsenal never had a chance, nor did they try. Oh, and by the way, Bayern Munich could hold Lewandowski hostage and force him to play out the final year of his contract with the German club.
In my book, Lewandowski is currently the premier striker in Europe, if not the entire world. Just look at his stats with Bayern Munich since joining the club in 2014; 238 goals in 253 appearances. Unreal! For his Polish national team he has 76 goals in 131 matches. The man can’t stop scoring goals.
Yes, I know, Arsenal would never have a prayer to sign a player of this quality. For one, there is no Champions League football to be played this season, and two, the Gunners have recently had bad luck signing “big name” strikers. Not since Robin van Persie have we had a world class striker consistently put the ball into the net. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was on course to be that guy, but as we all know how he fizzled out before reaching that level.
Anyway, all the best to Robert Lewandowski if he becomes Aubameyang’s new Barcelona teammate this summer. It would be interesting to see how that would work out. But, no matter what happens, you can be assured Lewandowski would dominate La Liga if he indeed joins Barcelona.
One can only dream about signing a striker like Lewandowsi.
Cheers.
