Premier League TV rights could become a real battle in the United States

The popularity of football, or soccer as it is called here, is growing by leaps and bounds every year. Americans are more familiar with the Premier League more than ever as a result of the combined efforts of Fox Sports, ESPN and NBC Sports over the past two decades.

NBC has been the exclusive broadcaster of the Premier League since 20134, however, renewing a new deal is not going to be a slam dunk. Instead, the Premier League will open talks with all interested parties in the weeks and months ahead. NBC’s current deal expires on May 22, 2022.

Who will be in the chase along with NBC? Well there is streamers Warner/Discovery, Amazon Prime, DAZN and fuboTV, however, I think ESPN and CBS will also be the main competition looking to block a new deal for NBC. The Premier League is obviously looking for a terrific streaming platform where all 10 weekly league matches can be seen, however, they will still be looking for a linear service, including over the air to broadcast some of their matches. This will cripple some of the contenders chances since they do not provide these services to their viewers.

However, at the end of the day, money talks and the rest walks. Bloomberg believes a $2-billion (USD) check will probably be the magic number the next broadcaster partner needs to write. That number is double what NBC currently pays the Premier League.

NBC Sports has done a solid job covering the Premier League. They came right out of the barrel in 2013 with a strong line-up of football announcers and analysts, and their production has been first class. Plus, every match has been made available every week the U.S., and for American fans, that has been a real plus.

In my opinion, CBS Sports will be NBC’s main competitor for the new contract. The “eyeball” network acquired the Champions League and Europa Leagues last season, and have taken a first class approach to covering those games. They have shown they are up to the challenge.

However it works out, American fans of “the beautiful game” will continue to be served a delicious assortment of matches every week.

With the U.S. rights battle on the horizon, the British have already finalized their deals to run through the 2024/2025 season. Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon Prime Video and BBC Sport will continue to share the matches. The collective price tag is $7-billion (USD).

At the end of the day, the Premier League will continue to be a money machine. You can take that to the bank!

Cheers.

  2. Write more, thats all I have to say. Literally, it seems as though you relied on the video to make your point.
You obviously know what youre talking about, why waste your intelligence on just posting videos to your site
when you could be giving us something enlightening to read?

  3. Wow, incredible blog layout! How long have you been blogging for?
you make blogging look easy. The overall look of your website is fantastic,
